Finished Already?!

Happy weekend, scholars! Can you believe the first week of school is "in the books"? That said though, you took full advantage of the first four days. Let's magnify and reflect on what we accomplished this week:

1. Commenced on SSR with summary/reflection reading logs
2. Learned our first (of thirty) vocabulary list
3. Participated in the media center orientation
4. Reviewed the characteristics of a personal narrative
5. Practiced a warm-up exercise (that we'll do every day for the rest of the year)
6. Completed our Eleven Questions about Reading outline
7. Led a student-based discussion on "defining moments"
8. Collaborated on your Classroom Expectations
9. Shared summaries of your novels to classmates
10. Had a good laugh at my amazingly funny jokes! ;-)

Phew! (wiping forehead) That's a lot for the first three days! (Tuesday was reserved for rules/policies/expectations.)

I'm absurdly impressed! You scholars are A-W-E-S-O-M-E (totally)! Relax this weekend and we will go hard on Monday.

Read those novels, bibliophiles, and don't forget to blog! :-)

Yours truly,

MK

Just as in Act III of any Shakespearean play, here is your comic relief for the weekend:

Mr Kittner,
Im surprised at how fast the week flew by. I'm excited about the weekend, (youth group is having a pool party), but can't wait for soccer tryouts on Tuesday!

W. Rierson,

Enjoy the pool party! Won't be long before the cool weather blows in. Agh! I hate cold weather.

Soccer tryouts Tuesday, huh? Good luck! And no skateboard injuries this weekend, OK, W?

See you Monday,

I would totaly recomend it to any one who likes realistic fiction! Now i'm just hoping it stops raining so I won't have to sit in the rain and watch my brother play football! I've done it for the past 2 years so i guess i'm going for a third!

I'm not really doin anything planned this weekend. But my mom cought the summer cleaning virus so I see cleaning in my future. This week went by fast! And I'm kinda getting used to my schedule. The book im reading, "Mister Monday" by Garth Nix is really good, but confusing. But like all mistery books all will be revealed in the end and I can't wait to get there. See you Monday!

I can't wait for the weekend either I have a baseball game and can't wait to see were I bat in the lineup and to see if I get to pitch!

S. Gray,

Well, did it stop raining yesterday so you could joyfully watch your brother's football game? (I won't tell him you were complaining about it.) ;-)

Wonderful to hear that your book is fighting back, grabbing your throat. I'm getting ready to begin _Monster_ by Walter Dean Myers, and I'm hopeful it will do likewise!

Enjoy the weekend. Why do they go by soooo fast??!!

B. Porter,

Aghhhhhh! the cleaning virus. Lord help you. You know there is no cure for THAT affliction. It's worse than the swine flu!!

I've got my fingers crossed that you survive and are alive in class come Monday! ;-)

I'm going to rack up some AR points this weekend!

H FREEMAN,

Well hello, stranger!! I thought that now that you were a too-cool freshman, you had forgotten about the blog -- the blog that you LOVED last year.

So, how's high school? Classes? Friends? Going to lunch without a teacher's supervision? (I bet you love that!)

Write back and keep in touch, H. Tell everyone I said, "You know it's going to be a GREAT day!"

M. Kittner

M. Kittner said...

D. Woody,

Hey, I agree with you: reviewing rules and expectations is monotonous, but we have to cover them ... thankfully only one day.

Baseball, huh? Where in the line up do you normally bat? First? Clean up? When I played little league I always batted first because I was fast -- it really sucked, though, when I struck out, being first.

And when you're not pitching, what position do you play? I see you as maybe a second baseman?

Let me know how your game goes. Take no prisoners ... and don't bean anyone (if you pitch)!

Good luck!

M. Kittner

M. Kittner said...

M. Lybarker,

Thanks, M, I hope to have a nice relaxing weeekend ... if my wife doesn't make me go shopping! Eww.

You have any exciting plans?

Great job this week! I really enjoy your eagerness to share responses and lead discussions. Keep up the good work.

You also seem like an AR machine, so I better begin racking up some serious novels!

See you Monday!

1909:

The sound of my ragged breathing seems to fill the chilly night air with fright. I hurry along the narrow, dirt road. The skin of my neck burns like red hot coals are placed upon it. Tears fall noiselessly down my cheeks.
In the distance I hear a twig snap underneath a pressure. That only makes me push forward faster. It’s not long until I’m running, my leather shoes pinching my feet. My dress dances behind me, not knowing I’m in terrible danger.
I hear footsteps follow me. I try to push my legs faster, but I’m already going as fast as I can manage. A hand reaches from behind me and grabs my hair. I scream. I pull away and, not turning around, kick at it. It lets go, but rips out a chunk of my hair. I wince in pain and run harder now, my long, damaged hair flying behind me.
I hear the angry hisses behind me as I run toward the small hut on the edge of the lake. The noise of nature goes silent as it hears the twisted curses it sends to me. The breath of evil will never fail until I’m gone. Until I have paid.
At some point when I was running, my shoes end up flying off, with me hoping they will hit it, to slow it down. So now my bare feet are slamming onto the hard gravel of the dirt road.

That is only a few sentences. The whole thing is like 2 pages long. If it is not too bad with the spelling and saying(my mom thinks that's my worst subject) you can post it...
:)

K. Yonkofski

P.S. Hoped you enjoyed it!!

Everyone,

Here is the rest of the story!

I need to reach her. I need reach madam Mandella. She will know the answer. She has to!
The stars above have vanished from sight. The moon frowns down upon me. I run for a few moments, it’s quiet. I think it has stop chasing me, for now. I know it will follow me as long as I shall live. Why have I brought this upon me? But I refuse to slow my running.
Still a long way to the lake, I step on something in the road. I don’t know what it is but it dug into my skin, and warm blood covered the whole bottom of my foot. Perfect! Now I have a trail it can follow. Not the footprints. But the smell of blood. It already has my hair.
My running slows gradually. The pain in my foot is unbearable. Dirt and leaves are in my wound now. Probably making it unbearable to clean. I can almost feel the gravel making its way through my bloodstream.
Wasn’t it just a few hours ago I was sipping tea with my father? Wasn’t just a few hours ago I watched my mother die? Now it is my turn. But I refuse to die now! I can’t die! I have more to live for. I haven’t seen to world like I want to. I haven’t found a man that I fancy. I haven’t seen my brother at his grave.
For he sleeps peacefully next to my mother now. Sharing a big marble grave. It might as well spell my name on it now. No! I will live!
After a half a mile I see the lights of the lake house in the not-so-far distance. Thank goodness! Only a few yards behind the lake house is madam Mandella’s hut. I grip the bottom of my dress higher and hurry along.
The pain in my foot has dulled a little by the time I rush past the lake house. Maybe it is because I’m on soft grass now. The only sound now is my not-so-quiet sobs and the sound of water from the starry night lake.
I run past abandoned rowboats and wooden benches that you can sit upon and stare at the lake all day. I have once done that. I forgot all my worries by watching lovers row on the lake and little children play in the water. It was a happy time then.
Then the smell of smoke and burning sage hit me. I look up from my feet and face small brown and orange hut with a hole in the roof, which smoke is spilling out. It almost looks like black liquid being poured out of the cup but upside-down and in slow motion.
Then I hear her chanting. I smile in relief, she is home. Cold sweat on my face disappears when I reach her home-made door. I don’t show any sign that I am here; I just rush into the one-room hut. Mandella stops her chanting.
She turns to stare at me. A dead chicken in one hand in the other is a sharp, blood-covered knife. Down the chicken’s belly is a deep cut running from its throat to its tail feathers.
She has started to progress toward me.
“Madam Mandella, it is happening. It is following me. It tore out my hair, as you can see, for I can feel a breeze I never felt on my head before.” I say quickly and painful.
She must have not heard me. “Child, you are bleeding.” She said referring to my blood-stained foot. I look down to see how dreadful it is. Mud and torn pieces of grass were sticking out of the gushing cut. I could not feel anything now because it has become numb.
“Yes, I know. Did you hear me? It is coming! It will be here in a few moments! Are you ready?” I ask.

Sorry it wouldn't let me post all of it. I'll post it on another one!

K. Yonkofski

Everyone,

Here is the rest......

Madam Mandella’s long black hair fell upon her pale white, small face. The shadow under her eyes says she has been working on the potion all day and night. Her small pearly white hands were shaking violently. The beads around her neck seemed to glow.
“Yes child, I will be ready in a few short moments. Here take this,” she took a long beaded necklace from her short, white neck, and handed it to me. “It will ward off only a least bit of evil. But it cannot help you when it arrives.” She warned me.
I take the necklace and shock. It is boiling hot. There is a cross upon the sliver chain that seemed to be boiling in hot water. The moment the necklace was placed on my slender neck, the cross begins to glow a violent color of blood red. The place where the cross laid on my dress it begun to burn.
“Yes child, I know it is most uncomfortable. But it is only that which can help you now.” She said as I flinched at the heat of it.
Then madam Mandella turned back to the dead, sliced-up chicken. In front of her was a small bowl. In it, it looked like hair from a goat, squished up lemons and dark lake water.
Madam Mandella then hung the chicken by its feet and let the blood drip of the bottom of the chicken and into the bowl. After all the blood from the chicken was in the bowl, madam Mandella plucked four feathers off it and added them in the bowl.
She then pulled an egg from under a sheet and broke the egg. She let the yolk and gooey white stuff fall onto the floor; she added the broken shell into the bowl. I wrinkled my nose in disgust.
Then madam Mandella held the knife to her wrist.
“Madam Mandella! What is it you are doing?” I scream with fright.
“I am adding the blood of the helper to the potion. It is the only way it will work, child.” She said coolly. Then without caution, she brought the blade across her white, petite wrist. Red, rich blood rolled down her white fingers and into the bowl. I almost gag, thinking I am going to have to drink this.
Once quite a lot of blood has dropped into the bowl, she wrapped her wrist in a dirty-looking cloth, and picked up a piece of bark with a sharp tip, and started pounding and stirring the potion.
In the distance I can hear hissing. I panic.
“Madam Mandella! It is here! Hurry!” I squeal.
“Alright child, it is done!” Madam Mandella picked up the bowl and held it out to me. I take the bowl, trying not to spill it because my hands are shaking uncontrollably.
I place the bowl to my lips when an eager expression crosses madam Mandella’s face. I shake my head and tip the bowl so the potion slides to my bloodless lips.
That is when the hut exploded and a black, twisted figured reached for me, and ripped out my already dead, broken heart.

Not a very happy ending is it? If you already haven't figured it out, I wanna be a horror author!
Hoped you liked it!

H. Freeman,

Restate the purpose the interview (topic) and what you learned about it through the interview.

Example:
After interviewing many students about their AR goals, it is certianly evident that the number one reason for success is the AR auction. Each interviewee expressed an interest to "take home a prize" and wanted to "have more AR money than that girl H. Freeman."
For whatever motivation, AR continues to be an incredible success at Walkertown Middle School.

Something like that.

Helps?

PS: You better use that new vocabulary you learned last year!! You would make that 8th LA teacher verrrrrrrry happy! ;-)
