Mnemonic Devices

Scholars,

Wait until you see how many Executives have qualified for the AR party!! Whoa! :-)) <---double smile!

Don't forget about your vocabulary test tomorrow!!!!!! Remember the study link on this blog! (List 5)

Got points? I do!!!! Muhahahahahaha . . .

I thought you may enjoy this article (from Braingle.com). Each day this website offers a variety of information about how we learn and provides daily games and activities to keep us mentally sharp. The link can be found at the bottom of the blog.

That said, you know how I am always telling you to come up with your own mnemonic devices (for vocabulary tests) and that I do not provide them? Well, here is why:

We have written about many different types of Mnemonics and Systems. Using a system is a very effective way to study because you can reduce the number of repetitions necessary to learn the material. This gives you extra time to over-learn it, or to learn something else.

Over-learning always helps to improve retention regardless of whether you use a mnemonic system. One thing to keep in mind is that using a mnemonic system does not magically implant the information into your memory forever. It only allows you to speed up the normal process.

Thus, you will still need to review the material from time to time if you want to retain the information. The good news is that it is much easier to review material if it has a mnemonic attached to it.

Mnemonics are sometimes taught in the classroom, and sometimes the teacher provides actual associations that you can use. This is good for people who are untrained, but studies have shown that if you create your own associations, you will learn the material more quickly because it will be more meaningful to you.

Yours truly,

M. Kittner

I have difficulties with mnemonic devices, but I find it much easier with repetition. After about three to four pages filled front and back with the vocabulary words, I have trouble getting them out of my head! That is, until the next week.

Mr.K on my trip to the library today I checked out "Ghosts I Have Been" by Rickard Peck. Just finished "There's A Boy In The Girl's Bathroom" as of right now. Those 6pts. will get me higher on the top 10 and when I finish "Ghosts I Have Been" its 6pts. will help too. "The River Between Us" is the only Peck book left; looks like you'll be calling me Richard with in 2 weeks. :))
